BEESWAX + BLOWTORCHES
STORY OF AN ARTIST: MICHELLE R. ACKER
I create works of art which reflect the beauty, peace, and simplicity of God's creation. My inspiration comes from the beauty and simplicity found in nature. The examples of joy, peace and hope found in Scripture also influence my work in a profound way.
My vision is to create an uprising of calm and beauty in God's creation, both people and places. Art is one of my primary outlets for bringing this vision to life.
I work in a few different mediums. My greatest joy is painting with beeswax and a blowtorch. The process, called encaustic painting, is thousands of years old. I use a mixture of beeswax and a tree sap called damar. The damar resin hardens and gives the wax durability. I melt this mixture and combine it with pigments to create the paint I use in my artwork.
To create an encaustic work of art, I apply molten wax to a wood panel "canvas" in layers. Each layer fuses to the layer below with heat from a blowtorch. It's an exciting and mesmerizing process. The layers of wax give each piece a unique translucent quality and beautiful texture. As the work ages and the wax cures, it develops a stunning translucent luminosity.
I also create works of art with both acrylics and watercolor.
My Upcycled Acrylics Collection uses acrylics and upcycled canvases. It brings me great satisfaction to take a discarded outdated old canvas and turn it into a new creation.
My Watercolor Wisdom Collection combines words with watercolor. Combining these elements allows me to create uniquely inspirational works of art.
I find myself thriving when I create works of art which reflect the calming peace of God's creation. I hope each piece brings you the same feeling of clarity and calm.
